Cornelia Funke writes children’s books. She was recently inspired by a visit to the Getty Center, where she learned about William Dampier – a pirate, explorer, and cartographer whose adventures took him from his native Britain all the way to Dunhuang, China. She has collaborated with the Getty Center before, and this time she chose to write a story about William Dampier and the caves of Dunhuang. She describes her inspiration, motivation, and creative process.
