The traditional Chinese language is written as a form of calligraphy, with more than 5000 characters, but only a few needed for everyday written communication. Historically, the characters were handed down from the gods themselves to only the most deserving of mortals, who were then revered. There are six basic strokes in the Chinese characters, which are a combination of horizontal, vertical and sweeping strokes.
