An immense mystery older than Stonehenge

If you translate Gobekli Tepe into English, it transforms into the endearing moniker Belly Hill, not perhaps nearly as intimidating as the British Stonehenge.

Yet, the former is making news as an excavation that appears to predate Stonehenge by thousands of years.

Reshaping previous ideas on the story of civilisation, Gobekli Tepe in Turkey was built by a prehistoric people 6,000 years before Stonehenge.

Klaus Schmidt, a dedicated archaeologist of German descent began the Turkish dig more than two decades ago.

Careful unearthing revealed crafted pillars and stone enclosures that appeared to predate Stonehenge by no less than six-thousand years.

The structures appeared to date back more then ten-thousand years to a time when hunter-gatherer societies were the norm among nomadic humans. The tools that were excavated bore this out.

An exciting development in discovering this trove of history is that creates a different human timeline.

It suggests that religion and ritualism entered human culture at an earlier time than supposed by scientists.

Key Takeaways:

  • Twenty-five years ago a dedicated archeologist began excavating a Turkish site that was to prove older than Stonehenge.
  • The excavation began upon a limestone plateau that translated from the Turkish went by the endearing name of Belly Hill.
  • Careful unearthing revealed twenty stone enclosures, apparently the work of a people that existed 6000 years before those that lived at Stonehenge.

“Tens of thousands of animal bones that were uncovered were from wild species, and there was no evidence of domesticated grains or other plants.”
